Coaching Education - IMPACT & CAP

IMPACT

IMPACT stands for Increased Mastery and Professional Application of Coaching Theory. This coaching education course is a minimum coaching requirement for anyone coaching within USA Volleyball and its RVAs (Regional Volleyball Associations) - of which Badger Region is one. This course must be paid for and completed before any coach is eligible to be placed on a roster.

IMPACT clinics will be held December through February. The clinic schedule is posted below. IMPACT is Increased Mastery and Professional Application of Coaching Theory The course emphasis is on drill development, principles of learning skills, resources, athlete safety, legal and moral responsibilities, and ethics. It is the minimum requirement for any coach in any USA Volleyball Junior Program.

IMPACT Plus Clinics are approximately six hours in length and include an on-court component. We recommend taking this course.

IMPACT Clinics are approximately four hours and are classroom only. Both clinics include the USAV IMPACT Manual.

IMPACT Clinic Procedure
The cost of the IMPACT Plus certification is $50 (minimum six hour curriculum and includes court time).  The cost of the IMPACT certification (four hour curriculum, classroom only) is $30.  Reminder: Assistant Junior coaches who are seniors in high school but have not yet reached the age of 18, who by region policy, must be accompanied by an IMPACT certified adult at all times, are required to be IMPACT certified.

Clinics will be scheduled in late fall and early winter in various areas of the region. The schedule will indicate whether the clinic is an IMPACT Plus clinic or simply an IMPACT clinic. Send the completed IMPACT Clinic Registration form with payment to the region office at least 10 days prior to the clinic date to allow time for the region office to send materials to the IMPACT Clinician. The registered individuals will receive an email confirmation prior to the clinic.

If an individual is unable to attend the clinic they have registered for, they must contact the region office prior to the clinic to be reassigned to another clinic. If an individual does not show up for a clinic and the region office has not been notified, the club will forfeit the registration fee and will need to re-register the individual and pay another fee. Emergency situations will be handled on an individual basis. A partial refund will be made if the Director of Operations considers an emergency situation appropriate.

Coaching Accreditation Program (CAP)

CAP is an acronym for Coaching Accreditation Program. CAP is a program through USA Volleyball for continuing coaching education and offers five levels. Badger Region offered Level I and Level II on Dec. 3-4, 2011 at Catholic Memorial High School in Waukesha and will next host in winter 2013-14 (every two years). Level I and II are for coaches of all kinds: colleges, junior clubs, high schools, middle schools, or anyone who wants to advance their coaching knowledge.

Please visit the USA Volleyball website to register for CAP events.

Level I topics include: effective teaching methods; organizing and administering a program; innovative drills and practice design; developing playing systems; and, observing and applying the methods presented. Level I requires 2 days of instruction by USAV CAP cadre and successful completion of two standardized tests. CAP Level I course includes the ASEP study course.

Level II topics include: techniques and tactics to coach the setter, teaching blocking tactics and techniques, teaching the 5-1 and 6-2 offensive systems and developing an effective team communication system; resistance and jump training presented in cooperation with the USOC; studying effective, responsible methods for coaching social differences within the game. Level II requires 2 1/2 days of instruction, completion of two tests, submission of a 1,000 word original manuscript within 12 weeks of course completion, and attendance or instruction at a minimum of one non-CAP coaching clinic after the Level II course attendance.

Academic credit is available through the University of Colorado for Levels I, II, and III. This applies for graduate and under-graduate credit.  Courses are one full credit. Request information when registering. Level III, IV, and V are designed to begin understanding of national and international experiences. Contact USAV for information on these courses.
